Snorkelling vs. Diving: Which Red Sea Experience Is Right for You?

You don't need a licence to fall in love with the reef. A friendly guide to choosing between snorkelling and scuba on the Red Sea.

The Red Sea is one of the few places on earth where you can see vibrant coral and hundreds of fish species just by floating on the surface. So do you really need to dive?

Snorkelling: easy, instant, magical No experience or certification needed. At shallow house reefs like Abu Dabbab, turtles and even dugongs graze metres from shore. Boat trips to Orange Bay, Mahmya and the Dolphin House reefs add deeper drop-offs and the thrill of swimming near wild dolphins.

Best for: families, first-timers, and anyone who wants beauty without the gear.

Diving: the full immersion Scuba opens up the Red Sea's legendary walls, wrecks and pinnacles — Elphinstone, Panorama Reef and the famous offshore sites. If you've never dived, a Discover Scuba session lets you try it safely with an instructor in a few hours. From there, a PADI Open Water course (3–4 days) certifies you to dive worldwide.

Best for: the curious, the adventurous, and anyone who wants to get closer to the marine life.

Our advice Start with snorkelling on day one, and if the reef pulls you in (it usually does), book a Discover Scuba session. Many of our partners offer both — often from the same boat.
