El Gouna vs. Hurghada: Which Should You Base Yourself In?

Two of the Red Sea's most popular hubs, 25 minutes apart but worlds away in feel. Here's how to pick your base.

Both sit on the same stretch of coast, but they attract very different travellers.

Hurghada: big, buzzing and budget-friendly Egypt's most famous Red Sea city is the gateway to Orange Bay, Paradise Island and Mahmya. Expect a wide range of hotels, lively markets, marina nightlife and the best prices on excursions.

Choose Hurghada if you want variety, value and easy access to the most popular island trips.

El Gouna: stylish, calm and self-contained A purpose-built lagoon town of canals, design hotels and car-free islands. It's the kitesurfing capital of the coast, with polished beach clubs (Zeytouna, Mangroovy) and a refined dining and nightlife scene around Abu Tig Marina.

Choose El Gouna if you want a quieter, more upscale base — and don't mind paying a little more.

Can't decide? They're only ~30 minutes apart. Base yourself in one and take a day trip to the other — our Hurghada ↔ El Gouna transfer makes it easy.
